Still Alive!

What can we say, it’s been a long time since we last spoke. We’re sorry, how have you been? No, seriously, tell us about it. We’d love to hear from all of you again!

Lately we’ve noticed the ennui setting in regarding staleness, and in return seeing the player count drop off because of this. We’re not mad, honestly. It means you’re out doing (hopefully productive) things, and as we’ve always said, “Real Life Comes First!” (not an official motto).

Of course we ourselves are no saints when it comes to being online, what with SpokenSquid and his university degree, dotlizard and her actual Job thingy, and whatever Zack is doing these days, we’ve all kind of dropped the ball recently. We’re truly sorry for this, but we do try and pop our heads in the door now and again, and will try and do so more frequently now that we have a bit of extra time on our hands. We hope you will do the same.

As for developments since the last post, we’ve actually had quite a few, most notably being the new additions to the moderator team! A big congratulation goes out to MIllgate10Mark10, Mule_is_my_name and Ieatbrekfast, all well deserving of their new rank for their dedication to DMZCraft.

Relating to this, we are currently looking to restructure the mod team as part of some updates we’re planning on rolling out over the next few weeks. So you might start seeing some people around with a Teal name in chat. These will be people that have earned the new rank of Omega. This rank is reserved solely for mods, so you can’t apply for it. These guys won’t have all the powers Alphas or Betas have, but they will be treated to a permanent subscription to all the donor perks, and will still be regarded as veteran players and key members of the community. They just won’t be full blown moderators – you should still listen to them though!

If you guys would like some convincing to come back online, Myself, dotlizard and the Betas have taken over development of Tricadia from Woparsons (shh, he doesn’t know yet), and there has been some fervent building going on, with more planned for the next few weeks. You’re welcome to give your ideas for additions, even building them in creative to be mirrored in the survival world!

We believe Cyphrus has made some excellent developments on his ship build, I know he’s finished the exterior and is now working on the interior spaces – His restaurant/dancefloor area is looking freaking amazing.

ItsProdigal has also been experimenting a lot with craftbook and redstone, and has managed to create some fantastic contraptions – most of all his 100% automatic tree farm. This thing is a sight to behold

As for server developments, we’re still looking at how we’re going to be dealing with the 1.8 update. A lot of things are going to change when this rolls out, most notably the changes to the way minecraft handles user identification. This change pretty much means everything will be broken. Like, everything. Due to this, we’re exploring several options for when 1.8 rolls out:

  • A) We switch to a whitelisted vanilla server until everything becomes stable. We can either keep this map, or go to a temporary freshly generated map.
  • B) We use a distilled development/snapshot version of bukkit that will be very stripped down functionality-wise (and possibly quite buggy) – keeping the current map.
  • C) We say “Screw that” to 1.8 and stick with the current server state until we can get a stable build of bukkit going.

We’d like to hear your feedback on this, so please vote on the poll we’ll be adding soon.

As always please send us your feedback on changes you’d like to see, complaints about other players or simply juicy gossip (I hear SpokenSquid has a cute butt!), and don’t forget we have forums that you guys can feel free to use, seriously, they’re just sitting there. And keep those rank applications rolling in, we love seeing them!

Get Social!

Hey guys, just a friendly reminder that we’re freaking everywhere. It’s pretty much the same content on all formats but posting things all over the place allows us to keep you up to date with what’s happening on the server no matter what medium you choose. So far we’re on Reddit, Facebook and Steam, Twitter will probably come too, as soon as we can find someone to keep it regular. Google+ can go fuck itself.

For best coverage, please join all of them so we can bombard you with lots of notifications whenever we post something on the blog! As for server news, we’re still trying to sort out a stable version of bukkit/spigot and are holding off hotfixing plugins until it sorts its shit out. We’re also looking at a pretty damn awesome stats plugin, but more on that when we actually get it configured and working for everyone. We’re also working hard on fleshing out the website and getting a commands reference for you guys so you know what’s up. In case you’re wondering, we’ve also added some rough guidelines for rank applications on the Ranks page, so you know what we expect of you.

Things are going pretty well on the player front (we hope), and most of you seem to be happy with the plugins we’ve chosen for you. Remember that we’d always love to hear about things you’d like to see on the server, be it plugins, events, or just general shenanigans! Drop us a line on [email protected] or via the contact form on the rules page if you have any concerns or queries deemed too private for general chat, and be sure to keep spreading the word about us to all your mates!

Holy Plugins! Batman!

Seriously, wow guys! We’ve been working hard behind the scenes as of late! Due to unspeakable acts performed by dotlizard herself, we’ve managed to secure an early build of Spigot, and have been slaving away to provide you a premium service to escape your extended-relatives this thanksgiving in the form of plugins! That’s right, you heard me! PLUGINS! Woo! #confetti.

As of now, most everything should be configured correctly, as we’ve been testing rigourously in a secret underground bunker in an undisclosed location, but there may be a few tweaks needed here and there, so be patient while we spray for bugs. Our base configuration is running on essentials, and everyone should be given most of the usual toys, with the higher ranks getting a few luxuries. We’ll be releasing a guide to all the rank perks and general commands list as soon as we get our act together.

Now, as I stipulated in my last blog post, everyone has been set to the starting rank, Nu. But, we have a brand spanking new application system set up right here on the site! Please go through this for all your promotional needs, as it goes right up our backends and into our faces, so we can’t miss ’em!

For now, anyone can totally go ahead and apply for any rank they want until we all get settled in. You should be wary though, ’cause although we already know a lot of you, we expect some sort of effort relative to the rank you’re applying for in your application. Higher ranks WILL need to have better quality applications! Guidelines for these will be coming soon. Moderator positions are open too, so if you think you’ve got what it takes to be an awesome member of the team then go right ahead and apply! Note that we’re not only looking for awesome people with cool hairdo’s and sick air guitar skills, but people who will contribute to the atmosphere, community and inject the server with tonnes of sweet ideas!

Now, I have a bit of bad news to stick on the tail end of this sucker, and that’s to do with the world border. Due to our (only very slightly) buggy version of spigot terrain generation is a bit borked. This means that we’ve had to set the world border to 2.5K in every direction from 0, 0 until we can render out a full version of the map with our racks and racks of monkeys. Don’t worry if you were living out past those boundaries before the border, your stuff will still be there, we’re only replacing those chunks that were previously ungenerated, and we’re generating with the same seed, so when we do release the gates you won’t even know the difference! (And hopefully this will provide a lag free experience for everybody when we go exploring, as no new chunks should need to be generated!)

Look! A thing!

Hey guys!

So I’ve decided it’s time to make our first proper post, and I’d like to start off by saying WELCOME!

We’ve seen such a warm response from players wanting a taste of 1.7.2, to rekindle the flame of a great community, and maybe perhaps a bit of friendly banter! It’s great to see so many familiar faces floating around, and we’re always looking for new friends! You can help us out by spreading the word to your minecrafting friends and simply maintaining a presence on the server!

For those that don’t know, DMZCraft spawned from three survival admins from another server, MCNSA. There are many reasons why we’ve done this, but that’s not really an issue. We maintain that we’re not really affiliated with MCNSA, although we share much of the same community. We haven’t left either! So expect to see us pop in now and again over on s.mcnsa.com. What matters is that we’re here, we’re fresh, and we’re most certainly not inexperienced! DMZ comes from the combinations of our three names, Dot (dotlizard, her nickname), Matt (Myself, SpokenSquid), and Zack (Leonheart515). It should be cleared up that it has nothing to do whatsoever with military pursuits resulting from the Korean war, or Computer networking – it’s simply an acronym.

I can only speak for myself, so I’ll say that I expect to be online quite a bit in the coming month or two, as I’m currently on my end-of -year break from uni. Expect me to drop out every weekend and for a few weeks around the christmas/new year period though, as work will pick up again. I know Leon has a lot of coursework to get through, and to combat this he’s limited himself to only an hour online a day – and good on him! Real life always comes first (but that’s not to say you guys come a close second!) as for dot, well she’ll pretty much be floating around some place or another, afk or not.

Currently we’re in Vanilla 1.7.2, but that will change as soon as bukkit and our selection of plugins have updated. For now, we have no ranks apart from Admin (Cyan) and Moderator (Light Green). Both ranks have temporary OP status, and have been instructed not to abuse this power (It will also probably be stripped when we get permissions up and running). We kindly ask that you listen to them, they’re here to be your friends but won’t be afraid to get nasty if a situation calls for it. When permissions are set up, we’re thinking of setting everyone back to zero. But, here’s the catch – we will set up a system of promotion wherein you guys can fill out a submission form on the website here, or on the subreddit at /r/DMZCraft with a few words about what rank you’d like, and why you think you deserve this rank (perhaps even including some screenshots of builds you’ve done), friends can even provide character references in the comments! Later on we will only accept applications for ranks one tier higher than your current, but for now we think it would be best for some people to skip a few ranks, taking into consideration our past experiences with those players. Applications for moderators will be closed until we get everyone settled in, but if you think you’re up for it – don’t be afraid to stick your hand up and jump in! We will review each submission individually, but note that we expect higher quality applications for the higher ranks! We feel that this will generate a much closer community, and will let players progress at their own pace, rather than fading into the background. It will, however require you to speak up and be noticed (and come out of your shell if you’re the quiet type!).

We expect to keep our plugin selection pretty simple for now. You know, the usual moderation tools like WorldGuard, WorldEdit, CoreProtect, NoCheatPlus, Modreq etc., but we will expand to some more exciting stuff later on, like Craftbook. We plan to use WorldGuard as our main protections plugin, as it offers us the most flexibility and customisation of regions. We are also researching economy options for the future, so look forward to that! We are, of course, open to any suggestions you may have of what you’d like to see on the server, and if possible, will try and bring it to fruition! After all, this isn’t just OUR server, it’s YOUR server!

That’s about all for now, we will try and continue to bring you updates on what is happening on the back end. And we encourage you to ask your friends to come and join us! We have big plans for the server, but we need the playerbase to make it happen! So thanks to all of you that have stuck your heads in the door so far, and I hope to see you online again sometime soon!
